Background: SASMOA negotiates with the Land Government, on behalf of employed doctors, award and company agreements on the remuneration of doctors. This covers all aspects of physicians` salary and working conditions (including roster, work schedules, breaks, penalties, allowances, professional development, reimbursements, and leave). These agreements are renegotiated every three years. We monitor and implement agreements to ensure that doctors are not scammed and exploited in the workplace. Sasmoa (Association of Medical Agents of South Australia) is the registered industry body that represents employed physicians (“employees”) in negotiations. Negotiations are taking place with the government, in particular with the South Australian Treasury Department (“the Employer”) and SA Health. Negotiations may take place six months before the expiry of the existing agreement. After negotiation, the adoption of a new company agreement is subject to a vote of all employees (through a formal voting procedure). To replace the existing agreement, a new agreement must be supported by a majority of employed physicians who participate in the vote. The agreement must then be approved by the South Australian Employment Tribunal. The SASMOA consultation process consulted with its members from June to August 2020 to better understand the issues of interest to physicians, from future medical officers to senior consultants.
We will use this information to prepare our negotiating position and the claims we will pursue with the government.
